Saflex® S Series solar-absorbing interlayers blocks solar heat and UV radiation transmitted through a vehicle’s glazing, so driver and passengers won’t break a sweat.

This advanced automotive solar control interlayer is an easy drop-in solution with a positive chain reaction:

High marks on energy savings

Testing conducted by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory determined that a windscreen made using the Saflex S interlayers  can reduce cabin temperatures up to 5°C (9°F). This translates to a potential four percent reduction in air conditioning power versus a conventional windscreen. That reduction in air conditioning translates to a fuel efficiency improvement greater than one percent.

On a per vehicle basis, these improvements are excellent.  Across an entire fleet of vehicles, the impact can be astounding.  



Reduce infrared waves

Wavelengths from the sun called Infrared (IR) light are responsible for generating excessive heat in vehicle interiors. Compared to windscreens made with standard interlayers, Saflex S series solar-absorbing interlayers provide measurable heat reduction in the passenger cabin of stopped or slow-moving vehicles by absorbing the heat-causing IR rays without compromising visibility.  

S Series products use more effective nano-particles for solar absorbing. They provide the best solar absorbing performance in the market and are best suited for side and back windows, and sun roofs. Due to the broad absorbance spectrum, S series products might not compatible with selected IR sensors. Please contact your representative for more information. Saflex® Solar Connect is the standard choice for windscreen applications because they allow the freedom for sensor use in conjunction with a solar product.

Saflex® Q Series Acoustic Interlayer

Clearly Better Sound Quality

Bluetooth technology, voice-activated commands, onboard navigation systems, and sophisticated audio equipment make driving more enjoyable, yet they dial up the interior noise.   A new advanced Saflex® Q Series acoustic interlayer addresses this problem with precise acoustic control.   

Saflex Q Series is an advanced tri-layer polyvinyl butyral (PVB) interlayer that reduces noise level by 4.7 dB versus a standard windscreen and 5.9 dB compared to tempered side windows within the medium frequency range (1,000 – 5,000 Hz).

The Clarity is Real

Saflex Q Series advanced acoustic interlayers are especially effective within the frequency of human key voice recognition ranges (2,000 – 6,000 Hz), reducing sound transmission by 4.8 dB over this range. In other words, consumers can hear a difference, and that can speak volumes about brand experience and perceived quality.



Lightening the Load

In response to regulatory and consumer demand for greater fuel efficiency, automotive makers rely on every opportunity to reduce overall vehicle weight. Saflex Q Series helps reduce the negative trade-offs of typical weight reduction efforts by enabling improved acoustics, even in thinner glass configurations.

Saflex Q Series enables improved acoustics in when paired with thin glass.

This solves the weight issue… For a typical windscreen, the reduction of glass thickness from 2.1/2.1 mm to 2.1/1.6 mm would result in a weight savings of 1.7 kg (3.7 lbs) or 11%.  In a standard windshield, this would result in an acoustic performance loss of 0.6 dB over the full frequency range (200 – 10,000 Hz).  However, when Saflex Q interlayers are used in the thinner configuration, the weight reduction can be achieved while still improving acoustic dampening over the standard windshield by 1.2 dB over the same frequency range.  

The addition of acoustic front side glass (2.1/2.1 mm) can enable a further reduction of 1.1 kg (2.4 lbs) while improving sound transmission loss through the side windows by 3.3 dB versus 5 mm tempered glass.  Across all glazing positions, Saflex technology allows automakers to use thinner glass without sacrificing cabin comfort.

Lightweighting also helps auto manufacturers meet global environment regulations for lower CO2 emissions, including the Kyoto Protocol, the Economic Commission for Europe (ECE), and U.S. Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards.

Avoids Retooling Costs

Typical weight reduction solutions can require expensive retooling. Automotive glazing made with Saflex Q Series can be substituted into a vehicle’s existing glass with no need for expensive redesign, retooling, or research and development.

Metallic coating reflects IR rays

XIR automotive solar control technology uses a transparent automotive film with a spectrally-selective metallic coating encapsulated between layers of Saflex® polyvinyl butyral (PVB), which in turn, are enclosed between two glass panes.
The metallic coating reflects heat-causing Infrared (IR) rays without impairing visible light transmission. The result — XIR laminated glass reduces solar heat gain an average of 35 percent more effectively than tinted automotive glass.

CO2 credit eligibility
